Bikinis, board shorts and barefoot elegance is the dress code for Australia’s only beach polo event and spectators who embrace the theme with their own unique style will have the chance to win Paspaley pendants and ‘money can’t buy’ Bunnamagoo wine.

Sand Chic and Style on the Sand add a fashion element to the vigor and excitement of Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2013, which will be played on the sweeping sands of iconic Cable Beach in Broome Western Australia on the weekend of May 18-19 2013. Four beach polo matches, including an international clash, will be played during the weekend tournament, which is the cornerstone of the Pinctada Cable Beach Polo Festival. The beach polo action is free to watch picnic-style from the beach or tickets can be purchased to the VIP marquee.

Festival Director Marilynne Paspaley AM is encouraging all spectators to dress for the occasion and participate in the ‘between chukkas’ fashion events on each day of the tournament – Sand Chic will be held during Saturday’s beach polo action while Style on the Sand will be featured on Sunday. Each day’s fashion event is open to all spectators, whether they are enjoying the beach polo action picnic-style on the sand or from the VIP marquee.

“Pinctada Cable Beach Polo is an inclusive event and Sand Chic and Style on the Sand have been introduced to reflect this – these events are designed to involve spectators in the beach polo tournament and the emphasis will be on fun as well as fashion,” Marilynne says.  “The judges will also be looking for innovative styles that reflect the unique nature of Australia’s only beach polo event and its location. Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2013 is played on the pristine sands of Cable Beach flanked by the azure waters of the Indian Ocean and the Kimberley’s distinctive red pindan earth – we are sure this landscape will inspire some stunning and stylish beach chic creations.”

A panel of judges, including fashion leaders and polo players, will determine the daily winners in the ‘fashion stakes’.

“Each day of the tournament has a different theme and the judges will be looking for spectators who best embrace it,” Marilynne says. “Saturday is the more casual ‘beach’ day and the emphasis is on fun and family – we’re hoping the men will put a fun twist on ‘board shorts chic’ and we’re excited to see the innovative creations the women will conjure up with the sarongs and beachwear they don after a swim.  Sunday’s Style on the Sand is beach polo’s answer to racing’s Fashion on the Field and the judges will be looking for the men and women who best embrace the theme of beach polo’s ‘relaxed and barefoot elegance’ dress code.”

The female winner of Saturday’s Sand Chic will receive a Paspaley yellow gold necklace, valued at $960, while Sunday’s Style on the Sand female winner will take home a Paspaley Australian South Sea pearl necklace, valued at $1,540. The male winners of Sand Chic and Style on the Sand will each receive a limited edition 6-litre bottle of Bunnamagoo 1827 Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from the vines of historic Bunnamagoo Estate, one of the Paspaley family’s vineyards in central NSW. In commemoration of the year the property was settled, Bunnamagoo has adopted the name “1827” for special releases of its finest wines.  The 6-litre bottles are produced in very small quantities and are the equivalent of eight standard bottles of the 1827 Cabernet Sauvignon, limited edition 2009 vintage.  While the retail value of each male prize is $500 this is a ‘money can’t buy’ opportunity as the 6-litre bottles are not available for purchase.

Marilynne Paspaley said she is delighted her family’s companies are supporting the inaugural Sand Chic and Style on the Sand events.

“I think the 6-litre bottles of Bunnamagoo 1827 Cabernet Sauvignon are a terrific incentive for the men to dress up on both days of the tournament,” she says.  “This wine is Bunnamagoo’s finest and, amazingly, a normal sized 750ml bottle is priced at $AUD1000 in the Chinese retail market!

“Cable Beach Polo 2013 is not just a great sporting event, it also pays homage to the rich history of the Kimberley region and the Kimberley community. Pearling is integral to Broome’s story and Paspaley has been there from the outset, farming the prized Australian South Sea pearl in the pristine waters off the Kimberley coast, which provides the stunning backdrop to Australia’s only beach polo tournament.  I am thrilled that Paspaley is offering two beautiful prizes for Sand Chic and Style on the Sand to reflect Broome’s rich pearling heritage.”
